Player Guardiola called “intelligent” could now return to Man City as loan move termination considered

Josh Wilson-Esbrand could now return to Manchester City as Stade de Reims consider terminating his loan.

That is according to Le Parisien in France.

So, what is the situation involving Josh Wilson-Esbrand? Let’s take a look…

Josh Wilson-Esbrand could return to Manchester City

Well – according to Le Parisien – Stade de Reims are looking to make room for Sergio Akieme after signing the Spanish defender, with the City Football Academy graduate at risk of seeing his loan move ended early as a result.

Wilson-Esbrand joined the Ligue 1 outfit on loan for what was intended to be the entire 2023/24 campaign back in July 2023.

However – despite the England U21 international making 13 appearances for the French side – he could now be returning to the Etihad Stadium earlier than expected.

Stade de Reims clearly see more value in giving Wilson-Esbrand’s game time to Akieme following his arrival on a permanent deal from Almeria.

It means the Londoner – who Pep Guardiola once called an “intelligent” footballer – may now have to find a new loan destination to see out the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign.

Wilson-Esbrand scored one goal and provided one assist in his 13 appearances for Stade de Reims.

Guardiola should take note of one thing

Interestingly, Wilson-Esbrand actually played in central midfield on two occasions, in addition to spending time at left-back, while on loan in France.

As we all know, Guardiola likes to invert his full-backs and have them playing in central midfield at times.

Therefore, the fact Wilson-Esbrand, who has already been complimented on his footballing intelligence by the Spaniard, received some exposure to that tricky position will surely be of interest to his boss back at Manchester City.

Hopefully, Txiki Begiristain can find a new loan arrangement for the 21-year-old if Stade de Reims do terminate the agreement, so he can continue his development away from the Etihad Stadium.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Wilson-Esbrand could even switch clubs today before the 11pm transfer deadline.
