Manchester City tried to sign Lamine Yamal from Barcelona during the summer transfer window.

That was according to journalist David Sanchez on Radio Marca.

The Citizens failed to convince Barcelona to part ways with the 16-year-old sensation and eventually moved for Jeremy Doku instead.

Now – as confirmed by Barcelona themselves – there has been a significant update on Manchester City target Lamine Yamal

What’s the story?

Well, the teenager has now signed a new contract with Barcelona running until June 2026.

As stated on Barcelona’s official website, Yamal’s new deal includes a release clause worth €1bn (£866m).

Therefore, Manchester City’s hopes of signing the Spain international are effectively over for a few years – at least – unless the Citizens trigger that release clause, which is highly unlikely.

Yamal has earned a new contract after making a huge impact under Xavi this season, as well as on the international scene by becoming the youngest goalscorer in Spain’s history.

Barcelona’s La Masia graduate has already started four games out of a possible eight in La Liga as the Spanish giants sit second behind Real Madrid by one point, providing two assists in those outings.

Manchester City unable to tap Lamine Yamal up

Despite the contract renewal, Manchester City might have been able to start tapping Yamal up ahead of a potential move to the Etihad Stadium when that deal expires in 2026.

However, the Citizens cannot even do that with much conviction, amid serious doubts over the future of Guardiola.

According to the Guardian – and also ESPN – the Spaniard is likely to leave when his contract expires in June 2025, by which point he would have been at the Etihad Stadium for nine years.

Nobody knows what the future holds for Manchester City after the 52-year-old departs, so Yamal is unlikely to be tempted away from the Camp Nou given that uncertainty.
