Jovan Mijatovic is now set to leave Red Star Belgrade for Manchester City in the coming days as Txiki Begiristain finds another wonderkid for Pep Guardiola.

That is according to Kicker.

So, what is the situation involving Jovan Mijatovic and Manchester City? Let’s take a look…

Jovan Mijatovic set to join Manchester City

Well, this is quite the coup for Manchester City.

The story from Kicker in Germany states that Manchester City have now beaten Bayer Leverkusen to the signing of Mijatovic, and the Serbia U19 international will move to the Etihad Stadium within the next few days.

It is said that Manchester City and Red Star Belgrade are yet to actually finalise negotiations, although the 18-year-old himself has decided to join the Citizens, so discussions should be sealed shortly.

Kicker add that Mijatovic is not expected to go straight into Guardiola’s squad and is likely to be loaned out to another side in the City Football Group, with New York City FC a potential destination.

It is a similar agreement to the £26m signing of Claudio Echeverri from River Plate – which was sealed earlier in January.

The Argentina U17 international has been loaned back to River Plate for 12 months.

Kicker add that Bayer Leverkusen were keen to sign Mijatovic due to his “fundamentally interesting profile and his high level of talent” – he certainly sounds like a real diamond.

Who is Jovan Mijatovic?

The name might ring a bell for Manchester City fans.

Mijatovic actually came close to scoring against Stefan Ortega in Serbia as Manchester City recorded a 3-2 win over Red Star Belgrade in the UEFA Champions League back in December, striking the base of the post with a fine effort.

Impressively, it was one of four UEFA Champions League appearances made by the Belgrade-born wonderkid this season. He has already become a valued member of the senior team at Red Star, which is quite the achievement considering his age.

In total, Mijatovic – who plays as a striker – has scored 11 goals in 26 appearances across all competitions this term, while also providing two assists.

It may be a while until Manchester City fans see the Red Star Belgrade No.22 shining at the Etihad Stadium, although the future certainly looks bright with him, Echeverri and Finlay Gorman arriving this month.
