Morgan Rogers – who Manchester City offloaded to Middlesbrough in 2023 – has now agreed to join Aston Villa.

That is according to The Athletic.

So, what does the news regarding Morgan Rogers mean for Manchester City? Let’s take a look…

Manchester City make millions through Morgan Rogers deal

Well – according to The Athletic – Manchester City will actually make £3.75m from this deal.

Aston Villa will pay Middlesbrough a total of £15m for the England U20 international, with Manchester City entitled to a 25% cut of that sum thanks to a hefty sell-on clause.

Manchester City signed Rogers from West Brom back in August 2019 for roughly £4m before sending him on loan spells to Lincoln City, Bournemouth and Blackpool – Middlesbrough then signed him on a permanent basis for £1m back in July 2023.

The 21-year-old never actually made an appearance for Manchester City.

Rogers featured exclusively in the City Football Academy before embarking on his loan spells away from the Etihad Stadium, making a total of 25 appearances for the U21 side.

The Halesowen-born prospect also made six appearances for the U18 side and six appearances in the U19 ranks at Manchester City.

Rogers earns his £15m move to Aston Villa after impressively scoring seven goals – while also providing nine assists – in 33 appearances for Middlesbrough so far this season.

Profit on Morgan Rogers

Rogers arguably did not live up to Manchester City’s expectations given the fact the Citizens were happy to sell him for just £1m.

However – despite that – Manchester City have still made a profit on this deal overall.

As aforesaid, it cost £4m to sign Rogers from West Brom, with Manchester City now making £4.75m from the deal once you include the 25% sell-on clause and the £1m sale.

Of course, it is only a small profit – £750,000 to be exact – but it just goes to show how Txiki Begiristain manages to safeguard Manchester City even when a transfer does not initially go to plan.
