Newcastle are refusing to give up on a deal to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City this month.

That is according to Rudy Galetti.

So, what is the latest on Kalvin Phillips at Manchester City? Let’s take a look…

Kalvin Phillips update

Well, it was talkSPORT who recently claimed that Newcastle were having difficulty in negotiations with Manchester City, as the treble winners insist on inserting an obligation to buy at the end of any loan agreement.

Newcastle did not want to make such a commitment without taking a good look at Phillips first on a traditional loan.

Talk of the England international moving to Tyneside then went quiet – suggesting discussions may have collapsed – although Galetti now claims that Newcastle are maintaining “pressure” on Manchester City to strike a deal.

The Italian journalist wrote on X (previously known as Twitter): “Newcastle are keeping their pressure to sign Phillips. Talks ongoing between NUFC and Man City for a loan transfer.

“Kalvin is keen to join the Magpies, especially in view of EURO 2024.”

Manchester City have succession plan

Manchester City already know exactly what they want to do once Phillips departs the Etihad Stadium.

A story from Sky Sports claimed that Txiki Begiristain is on the lookout for a young, homegrown central midfielder to replace the 28-year-old.

If Manchester City’s Director of Football is unable to find a midfielder of that ilk, Benfica No.87 Joao Neves could be signed instead.

A claim from Graeme Bailey revealed that Manchester City are among the frontrunners to sign the Portugal international – Bernardo Silva has already admitted that he will try to lure his fellow countryman to the Etihad Stadium as well.

Be sure to keep an eye on developments at Manchester City this month, as a new central midfielder is likely to arrive if Phillips leaves.
