Pundit says England should now play ‘clever’ Manchester City player regularly in midfield

Scott Minto has said that Phil Foden should be playing much more in midfield for England.

On talkSPORT’s Premier League All Access podcast, the pundit made this claim after the Manchester City attacker’s bright display in the Three Lions’ latest 2-0 win against Malta.

Interestingly, Foden himself has previously admitted that his favoured position is in the middle of the park.

Branded as “clever” by Danny Murphy, the 23-year-old has largely played out wide for Gareth Southgate’s side at international level.

For instance, against Malta, the Stockport-born technician operated out on the right wing, with Marcus Rashford deployed on the opposite flank.

But Scott Minto believes it is high-time that Phil Foden starts in midfield in an England shirt.

“I don’t think the team was badly picked by Gareth, I think ultimately, you’ve got to go out there and try and show what you can do. I look for the positives but also see what perhaps didn’t work. The positive for me was Phil Foden.”

“I think he’s a really good player, I love to see him in the centre as well rather than out wide”, he told talkSPORT’s Premier League All Access podcast.

Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham would complement each other perfectly

If Gareth Southgate listens to Scott Minto, one can imagine England fielding a midfield three of Declan Rice, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham, which reads like the stuff of dreams.

The prospect of Foden and Bellingham wreaking havoc in the final third for the Three Lions is an especially exciting one.

The pair would provide excellent balance in midfield, with both capable of operating behind the striker as well as in deeper areas.

If England aim to impose themselves on teams in Euro 2024, Phil Foden must be deployed in midfield alongside another gem of a talent in the Real Madrid superstar.
