Pundit shares who he would start as England’s number 10 against Greece – Phil Foden or Cole Palmer

Phil Foden would be keen to start in England’s upcoming clash against Greece in the UEFA Nations League.

Foden was unavailable for selection during the Three Lions’ previous camp and he would be determined to impress Lee Carsley.

It has been reported that Carsley could start Foden against Greece in a deeper midfield position on Thursday.

In England’s games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, the 50-year-old old started Kobbie Mainoo and Angel Gomes respectively alongside Declan Rice.

It seems like Lee Carsley is trying to find the answer to the central midfield position in his side.

The Manchester City midfielder could prove to be the answer if he is given the chance to start against Greece as a number eight.

Scott Minto reveals Foden vs Palmer verdict ahead of England vs Greece

In the number 10 position, Cole Palmer is England’s most in-form player at the moment.

Palmer has registered six goals and five assists in seven Premier League games for Chelsea this season.

Enzo Maresca has deployed Palmer as the Blues’ central attacking midfielder in every game he has started in barring during his side’s 2-0 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s men where he started on the right-wing.

During Euro 2024, Foden’s main competitor for the number 10 role was Jude Bellingham, who exploded into life playing in a more advanced role during his debut season at Real Madrid.

But now, the £225,000-a-week man’s former Manchester City teammate is starting to establish himself as a world-class player in the hole behind the striker.

The challenge on Lee Carsley’s hands is to fit all of the country’s most exciting talent into one side.

On talkSPORT, Scott Minto revealed that he would personally start Palmer over Foden as England’s number 10 against Greece.

“I would put him [Jude Bellingham] in between Declan Rice and Cole Palmer. I wouldn’t play Phil Foden. I’d have Cole Palmer as my number 10, I’d have [Bukayo] Saka on the right, [Anthony] Gordon on the left who I always wanted again during the Euros and Ollie Watkins up front.”

“I don’t even think it’s controversial to say Palmer ahead of Foden right now. Right now. What’s going to be interesting to see if Foden gets back to his form of last season, then it’s going to be interesting.”

Phil Foden will have to extinguish Cole Palmer threat on the pitch

In March, Foden revealed the number 10 role is his favourite position to play in on the pitch.

But now that Palmer has emerged as one of the best players in Europe as an attacking midfielder, the six-time Premier League winner’s place in the England side could be under threat.

Notably, the Chelsea talisman also proved his credentials in a Three Lions shirt during the European Championship.

If Foden intends to become England’s starting number 10, he will have to bride the gap between himself and Palmer on the pitch.

With a bulk of the 2024/2025 season left coupled with how influential the silky technician was during the previous campaign, he could prove once again why he is a cut above the rest.

Foden has all the experience and pedigree in the world to do his talking on the pitch and send a strong message to Lee Carsley regarding why he could be the best attacking midfielder in the country.
