Pundit Don Hutchison has claimed that Manchester City have made a top signing by bringing in Mateo Kovacic this summer.
As things stand, the midfielder, who arrived from Chelsea on a four-year deal worth a reported fee of £30m last month, is the only player to join the treble winners in this current transfer window.
With the Citizens reportedly getting close to landing a deal for Josko Gvardiol, one pundit has taken the time to assess City’s transfer window so far.
Hutchison assesses City’s summer deals
Speaking in a recent video on the ESPN FC YouTube channel, Hutchison said this on the topic of City’s transfer window so far and what the remainder of it could look like for them.
He said: “[Ilkay] Gundogan is one of my favourite players so I’d have to say they’ve got worse. But at the same time, they’ve got a real player in Kovacic from Chelsea.
“I’d never bet against [Pep] Guardiola, if he moves players on, there’s a reason why because either they’re not playing and he’s got a human side to him.
“At the same time, he casts players away that he thinks he can improve on, he did the same with [Oleksandr] Zinchenko when he got [Manuel] Akanji in, he did the same with [Gabriel] Jesus when he got [Erling] Haaland in.
“I think there’ll be more moves to come from Man City in the coming weeks.”
During his time at Chelsea, the midfielder made 221 appearances for the west London club across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing 15 assists along the way.
With Gundogan waving goodbye to the club to join Barcelona as a free agent, it’s easy to see why they have brought in the former Chelsea star, especially given the position he plays and the experience he has of playing in the Premier League and in Europe.
Now that the 29-year-old has had his first taste of training with the City squad and is now involved in their pre-season tour of Asia, their upcoming matches against Yokohama F. Marinos, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid could be a great opportunity for Kovacic to get the feel of what it’s like playing in a Guardiola side.
