Alan Shearer has now heaped praise on Douglas Luiz – who Manchester City sold in 2019 – for transforming Aston Villa.

The 53-year-old made the comments when selecting his Premier League Team of the Week.

So, what did Alan Shearer say about Douglas Luiz? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, Manchester City sold the Brazil international to Aston Villa in a £15m deal back in July 2019.

Since then, Luiz has largely shone at Villa Park, with his game noticeably moving up a gear since Unai Emery replaced Steven Gerrard.

The South American has scored five goals in just nine Premier League appearances this season – taking Aston Villa to fifth in the Premier League – leaving Shearer stunned by his progress.

The Premier League’s record goalscorer said: “Aston Villa keep going from strength to strength under Emery, and one player who has typified their incredible start to the season is Douglas Luiz.

“The Brazilian midfielder produced another outstanding display in midfield against West Ham United on Sunday as his brace helped Villa to an impressive 4-1 win. Two goals in a dominant display. He really led his team well. He’s been laying the foundations for Villa’s success this season.”

Why Manchester City sold Douglas Luiz

Sadly, Manchester City were backed into a corner with Luiz.

The 25-year-old failed to obtain a work permit during his time at the Etihad Stadium, which meant he was loaned to Girona from 2017 to 2019 – a side involved in the City Football Group.

Luiz was never able to obtain a work permit to play a competitive fixture for Manchester City, and was only able to get one at Villa Park due to the size of his £15m transfer fee.

That sum of money, and a presentation from Aston Villa, showed the Home Office that he was worth handing a work permit too – according to the Birmingham Mail.
