Mick McCarthy has said that Phil Foden struggled to play in Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves in the Premier League.

The Manchester club fell to their first defeat in the Premier League this season after conceding an own goal from Ruben Dias and a second-half goal from Hwang Hee-chan.

Following the game, one pundit, who has connections to both of the clubs in action this afternoon, highlighted how difficult one particular City player found it in the game.

Speaking in a recent post-match livestream on the club’s official YouTube channel, McCarthy had this to say about Foden and his efforts at Molineux.

He said: “I think what highlights, for me, in terms of the Manchester City performance is Phil Foden. I think he’s brilliant and I was really looking forward to watching him today.

“I can’t remember a real forward-thinking thing he did, it was really tough for him playing in there, they were really narrow, there was no room for him to play. And when he doesn’t have a kick in the game or a good game, you know how tough it’s been.”

Looking back over the defeat, the Englishman had 50 touches of the ball in total, leaving only Erling Haaland (15) and Julian Alvarez (43) as the two City players that completed the full 97 minutes of the game with fewer touches than Foden.

This highlights how the 23-year-old was unable to make as much of an impact on the game as he and his manager would have liked.

It also backs up McCarthy’s point about him not being able to operate consistently due to Wolves’ set up and their defensive efforts on the day.

Moving forward, the best thing Foden and the rest of his City teammates can do now is learn from this defeat and focus on changing their fortunes around by getting a positive result in their next game against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
