Barcelona are reportedly confident of securing a transfer deal for Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan today.

With the midfielder’s contract at the Etihad Stadium set to expire at the end of the month, the 32-year-old has found himself attracting interest from several clubs, most notably, Barcelona.

Now though, some behind-the-scenes details have come to light which may cause concern to some City supporters that are hopeful of seeing the German sign a new contract in the coming days.

According to a recent report from Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish club are confident that they can wrap up a deal that would see Gundogan join them this summer as a free agent, with the potential hurdle of registering him not being a problem.

The midfielder recently brought an end to his seventh season with the Citizens by lifting his fifth Premier League title, second FA Cup and first Champions League trophy.

Having scored both goals in City’s 2-1 win over Manchester United in the FA Cup final as well as in critical games against Everton and Leeds United in the latter stages of the league campaign, this highlights how significant he is for the team in being able to deliver in the big moments that lead to titles being won.

Bearing in mind how Pep Guardiola, who has previously described the midfield maestro as an “exceptional” player, has made it clear that he hopes to see Gundogan sign a new deal at the Etihad, this shows how much the manager values him and his place in the team.

With all of that in mind, if Barcelona are confident they are going to seal a deal for City’s captain, this suggests that they have had some sort of sign that Gundogan wants to join them rather that sign a new contract at his current club.
