Man City actually held discussions to sign ‘top player’ last week

Recently, Pep Guardiola has suggested that there is a possibility that Manchester City could bring in fresh faces into their squad during the summer transfer window.

Guardiola was recently quoted by journalist Sam Lee: “Maybe in other years I said, ‘ No chance’ but maybe this season, it is going to happen until the end of the market. I don’t know yet, we have to talk and see what happens.”

As the Catalan stated, Manchester City tend to do a bulk of their summer business much before the closing stages of the transfer window.

But with Julian Alvarez’s move to Atletico Madrid, it seems like the Sky Blues are more willing than in previous years to explore the market until the end of the summer transfer window.

The English juggernaut have added the likes of James McAtee and Nico O’Reilly to their first-team, as confirmed by Pep Guardiola via Manchester Evening News after his side’s 4-2 win against Chelsea.

Report shares how interested Man City are in Premier League star now

It will be interesting to see how many players City target to supplement their squad for the 2024/2025 season.

With more than two weeks left in the transfer window, there is still enough time for them to attack the market and sign fresh faces.

In recent years, the Premier League winners signed Manuel Akanji and Matheus Nunes in September 2022 and 2023 respectively.

As per a report by The Athletic, Manchester City held “informal discussions” to sign Eberechi Eze — described as a “top player” by Marc Guehi via BBC Sport — at the end of last week.

It has been claimed that City are looking set to explore a wide number of transfer targets in their pursuit for a new signing.

Last Wednesday, it was reported that Guardiola was hesistant about targeting Eze, instructing Manchester City not to table an offer for him yet as they already had Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva as options on the right-wing.

Eberechi Eze fails to offer Man City a different attacking profile

Every attacking player at Manchester City offers the squad a unique profile.

In Eze, City could be targeting an incredible dribbler who is capable of drifting out wide while primarily doing his best work in the middle of the park.

However, in Phil Foden, the Sky Blues already have a similar profile of player who also scored 19 goals in the Premier League last season.

Jack Grealish also possesses similar traits to the Crystal Palace attacker and during his three-year spell at the club, he is yet to be offered a central role where he had a similar impact to the latter at Aston Villa.

As a result, Eze’s potential arrival would not add much to a City side who are perhaps looking for a profile of player their squad currently lacks.
