Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on Manchester City’s transfer pursuit of Josko Gvardiol.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the Citizens are preparing to make a move for the RB Leipzig defender.

Now though, some fresh details have emerged regarding the Manchester club’s interest in the Croatian.

In a recent Twitter post, Romano had this to say on the matter.

He said: “Understand Manchester City are advancing on Josko Gvardiol deal on player side. Negotiations on personal terms are progressing well, same as [Mateo] Kovacic. Leipzig will only sell Gvardiol for huge fee otherwise they are prepared to keep him for one more season.”

After joining the German club back in the 2021 summer transfer window from Dinamo Zagreb, the 21-year-old has made 87 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and delivering three assists in the process.

In fact, one of those goals came against Pep Guardiola’s side in the Champions League first-leg knockout match which ended in a 1-1.

Having then gone on to lose 7-0 to the treble winners in the return leg at the Etihad Stadium would presumably make a move to City rather exciting for Gvardiol, especially since he’d be joining a club that recently won the treble..

Even though Guardiola currently has a decent number of defensive options in his squad at the moment, who helped City end their latest title-winning Premier League campaign with the joint-fewest number of goals conceded (33) than any other side in the division, their apparent pursuit of the Leipzig youngster shows how much they appreciate the player.

In fact, with Romano suggesting it would likely take a significant transfer fee to land his signature, this further highlights how eager the Citizens are of adding Gvardiol to their ranks this summer.
