Manchester City have reportedly made an offer to sign Atletico Madrid winger Rodrigo Riquelme.
Despite journalist Mike Minay tweeting that there is currently no interest from City in signing the 23-year-old, a report from Spain has now claimed that the Manchester club have firmly placed themselves in a position to do so.
City make offer to sign Riquelme
According to a recent report from Spanish media outlet AS (via Sport Witness), City have expressed their interest in signing Riquelme to Atletico and have even made an offer for the player.
The report also adds that while talks are in an early stage, the Spanish club have not dismissed the idea of selling the winger, even for a fee lower than the €60m (£51m) release clause in his contract.
Last season saw the attacker complete a loan spell with Girona, where he ended up scoring five goals and delivering four assists across 35 appearances.
With 34 of those appearances coming in La Liga, the Spaniard ended the campaign with more progressive carries (116) and successful take-ons (57) than any other player at Girona, as well as having the second-highest total of shots at goal (56) and shots on target (22).
This has since led to Atletico’s president, Enrique Cerezo, describing the winger’s efforts last season as being “magnificent” for Girona.
While there may be some uncertainty over whether the Citizens are in the frame to sign Riquelme or not this summer, it’s clear that he is a player with talent and the time ahead of him to present that talent and become a top player.
