Manchester City are reportedly closing in on securing a transfer deal for Mateo Kovacic.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the Chelsea midfielder had agreed personal terms with the Citizens, who were said to be looking to discuss a potential fee with the west London club following the recent Champions League final.

With City having ended the season with three trophies added to their cabinet, a fresh update has come to light regarding their interest in Kovacic.

In a recent Twitter post, journalist James Olley said this on the matter.

He said: “#mcfc closing in on deal worth around €40m for #cfc midfielder Mateo Kovacic. Few issues to resolve including how much is paid up front (to help #cfc with FFP compliance) but expectation is deal should be done by June 30.”

After making over 100 appearances for Real Madrid, the Croatian joined Chelsea on an initial loan deal in 2018 before securing a permanent move to Stamford Bridge worth £40m a year later.

During his time at Chelsea, the 29-year-old made 221 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals, providing 15 assists and winning one Champions League title.

That Champions League title came back in 2021 where Chelsea beat City 1-0 under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel, who previously described the midfielder as an “outstanding” player.

Bearing in mind how City could be seeing Ilkay Gundogan leave the club in the coming weeks with his contract set to expire at the end of the month, bringing in Kovacic could be their way of having a suitable replacement should the German decide to walk away from the Etihad Stadium.

Either way, with the treble winners looking to get this deal done while still pretty much in the early days of the summer transfer window, this shows how eager they are to get him in the squad.
