Report: Manchester City admire Brighton star Tariq Lamptey

Manchester City are reported to be admirers of highly rated Brighton full-back Tariq Lamptey.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the Citizens are named as being keen on the 20-year-old full-back, despite him recently signing a new £40,000-a-week deal at the Amex Stadium.

Lamptey has made waves on the south coast since joining the Seagulls initially on loan in January 2020.

He turned his move permanent from Chelsea last summer, and rapid Lamptey has wowed with a string of impressive performances.

According to Ornstein, Arsenal and Everton are also hovering and Lamptey’s new deal is unlikely to put anyone off.

It is understood Brighton’s asking price remains the same despite those fresh terms.

City currently have two top right-backs in Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo, but the latter does sometimes fill in at left-back.

Lamptey a long-term Walker successor?

He hasn’t been on the scene for very long, but Lamptey looks the real deal.

His searing pace potentially makes him a very good replacement for Walker in the long-term.

The England international is fit as a fiddle and arguably still has a couple of years at the top of his game, but there’s a chance he’ll eventually lose his greatest asset, his pace, which could prompt a transition to becoming a centre-half.

With City supposedly armed with a £200 million war chest this summer (Telegraph), it would be no surprise to see Lamptey targeted.
