Rio Ferdinand says 23-year-old Man City star has been the Premier League’s best player this season

Rio Ferdinand believes one Manchester City player has been a cut above the rest of the Premier League this season.

Manchester City are enjoying yet another great campaign and could still go on to win an unprecedented second treble in a row.

Pep Guardiola’s side are already into the FA Cup quarter-finals and qualified for the last eight of the Champions League by defeating FC Copenhagen on Tuesday.

City currently sit second in the Premier League table but can leapfrog leaders Liverpool if they pick up three points at Anfield on Sunday.

Despite City’s success, and the great form of Liverpool and Arsenal as well, Rio Ferdinand thinks only one player is the obvious choice for the Player of the Season award so far: Phil Foden.

Rio Ferdinand says Phil Foden is the Player of the Season

When asked if Foden has been the best player in the Premier League so far this season on TNT Sport, Ferdinand said: “I would say yes.

“He is in that mix, definitely. When you think about Player of the Season, who else is there? No one is jumping off the page.

“Ollie Watkins maybe?

“I think this guy is top of the tree at the moment, but there is still a long way to go in the season and you have got to produce on the home straight.

“He’s used to it, he’s experienced enough and he’s in the driving seat for that trophy.”

Will Phil Foden win Player of the Season?

Ferdinand may not think Foden has much competition but there are plenty of players who will be gunning for the Player of the Season award.

Many of them are Foden’s teammates. Erling Haaland has continued his fine scoring form and is top of the goal charts with 18.

Rodri has once again been incredible and deserves recognition while Kevin De Bruyne has given himself a fighting chance despite missing the first half of the campaign with injury.

Away from City, you have Bukayo Saka who is driving Arsenal’s title challenge like Mohamed Salah is doing for Liverpool and, as Ferdinand points out, the great scoring form of Ollie Watkins.

However, if Foden keeps his level of performance so high he will certainly be the favourite.
