Pep Guardiola has faced off against many clubs during his time in charge of Manchester City.
Having been at the Etihad Stadium since 2016, the 53-year-old took on Luton Town for the first time in the Premier League last season after they won promotion.
It ended up being a rather tough campaign for the Hatters though, as they found themselves being relegated after picking up just 26 points in total, scoring 24 goals and conceding 52.
Facing off against the Manchester club twice in the league and once in the FA Cup, Rob Edwards has now opened up about what it was like to come up against Guardiola’s side.
Rob Edwards claims Man City were Luton Town’s toughest opponents last season
While reflecting on Luton’s season in the Premier League last term in a recent edition of High Performance, Edwards had this to say on what it was like to play against City.
He said: “The City away game was the hardest game that we had all season, there’s no doubt about it. We couldn’t get out, they were incredible that day.
“We a little bit under strength and you look at the squad you turn around, I got two goalkeepers, five teenagers on the bench and we were at that time we had a lot of people missing but they were unbelievable, they were brilliant.
“They were fast, clinical, so so disciplined but they worked incredibly hard, their intensity was just another level, it was brilliant, that was tough.
“Pep’s team was great and the plan that they had against us, I mean the FA Cup game was incredible he played all of his dribblers the people that could handle the ball against that man-for-man press and he’d have John Stones stepping forward and was playing like a number 10 and taking our number nine back all the way with him as well.
“It was a nuts game and it should have been about 8-4 it ended up 6-2 to them but we created big chances, it was a brilliant performance but we got some things wrong but they were incredible.”
City enjoyed themselves against Luton at the Etihad
After securing a rather close 2-1 victory at Kenilworth Road, the Blues beat Luton 5-1 at the Etihad in the return fixture.
Looking back over that particular match, City ended up having 74% possession and 37 shots at goal in total, 13 of which were on target.
This showcases how dominant the home side were over Luton and why Edwards considers it to be their toughest game of the season.
