Manchester United legend Roy Keane once named the Manchester City icon he feared would’ve ‘twisted me inside out’

Manchester City and Manchester United boast one of the fiercest rivalries in English football, with both sides vying for bragging rights in the city.

The pendulum has swung back and forth a couple of times over the decades, with Manchester City having been on top for the most part in recent years.

However, the form book tends to go out the window in derbies.

For instance, City had only just been promoted back to the top flight in 2002, yet they beat then title-challenging United 3-1.

The Red Devils are a shadow of their former selves now, compared to the days when the likes of Roy Keane were in their prime.

United were usually on top at the time, but things have changed. Indeed, Keane himself once suggested he was glad he didn’t play in the same era as a recent club legend.

Roy Keane says David Silva would’ve turned him inside out

In 2020, Keane spoke highly of David Silva, who was leaving City to join Real Sociedad.

The former United captain described Silva as a “little genius” and admitted he would’ve “twisted me inside out”.

Keane said on Sky Sports: “I always think of the top players who have played in the Premier League – Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Steven Gerrard, Ryan Giggs.

“David Silva is up there with all those boys, absolutely fantastic.

“It is just a pity when you think of him leaving in an empty stadium, I am sure the City fans would have loved to give him a big send off and I am sure he will come back and get one.

“I look at players who have played over the last 10 years and I always think since I have retired about players I would have loved to have played against.

“But he is one I am glad I was not around to play against because I know he would have twisted me inside out! A little genius.”

City cult hero Joe Hart recently said he’d pick Silva over Phil Foden.

David Silva’s Manchester City career

Silva joined City from Valencia back in 2010 – shortly after winning the World Cup with Spain – for a fee of around £24million.

By the time he left the Etihad Stadium in 2020, he had done enough to warrant a statue of him outside the ground.

Silva’s 10-year stint at City saw him win four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five League Cups and three Community Shields.

He clocked up 436 competitive appearances for the Citizens, along with 77 goals and a staggering 129 assists.

Silva also won Euro 2008 and Euro 2012 with Spain, making it a clean sweep of international trophies for La Roja during that period.
