Sergio Aguero spent the prime years of his career at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola’s guidance.
Initially, it seemed like Guardiola seemed like he was ready to phase Aguero out as he was giving Gabriel Jesus regular starting minutes upon his arrival from Palmeiras in January 2017.
But the Manchester City legend regained his place in the side and became Pep Guardiola’s go-to goalscorer. So much so that the two-time treble-winning manager was famously in tears when the 36-year-old played his final Premier League game for the club against Everton in 2021.
Under Guardiola, the Argentine arguably became the most complete version of himself.
The five-time Premier League winner significantly improved while pressing and often took up wide areas to create space for the rest of his teammates in goalscoring positions.
Having worked with Pep Guardiola from 2016 until 2021, Aguero needs no reminding of his working methods.

Aguero reveals “strict” Guardiola’s “keep winning” demands
The retired striker was a part of some of Guardiola’s best teams.
The “Centurions” in 2018 stand out as well as the domestic treble-winning side in 2019 that accrued 98 points. Furthermore, the former Atletico Madrid marksman was also a part of the first City side to reach the Champions League final after winning the Premier League and the Carabao Cup in 2021.

Aguero revealed that Pep Guardiola pushes his players to win at all times, which can be quite a draining process but praised his former manager’s relentless pursuit for success.
The Manchester City icon initially told Sky Sports: “For me, he’s the key man for the club so that the players have the same winning mentality. Sometimes, it gets difficult to win and it’s normal but Pep’s [Guardiola] team has been up there since he took charge and that’s something many people don’t see.”
“I think we have to acknowledge he’s the reason his players have a winning mentality. He’s strict and he makes the team be consistent every single game throughout the season.”
Aguero continued: “We should take our hats off because it’s not easy to be there with the players every day, especially considering the players we’re talking about.”
“All the time, he’s like, ‘come on, we have to keep winning!’ Living that every day can get exhausting sooner or later, but he’s been doing this for days, months, even years and I think that’s why City are one of the favourites because Pep never rests and he never gives a rest to his players. That, for me, is the key to success for any team.”
Sergio Aguero says Man City are “favourites to win everything”
Aguero also revealed that Manchester City remain the favourites to win every single competition.
“I think City are favourites to win everything, including the league, the [FA] Cup, the Club World Cup and the Champions League.”
Whatever City has to play for they’ll be the firm favourites, but I think it all depends on the mentality they have because it’s not easy to always be the favourites.”
Aguero’s admiration for this Manchester City side and Pep Guardiola is crystal clear.
Knowing how much of a perfectionist Guardiola is, it seems like the legendary striker has no doubt that he will whip the players into shape and continue to win major silverware this season.
Aguero’s claims should drive this group of City players to further etch their names into the history books.
Based on his revelations, Pep Guardiola will do everything in his power to make sure that is the case.
