Alan Shearer has lauded Manchester City defender John Stones for his display in his side’s 2-1 win against Brighton & Hove Albion.

In his Premier League Team of the Week, the popular pundit named the £47.5 million (BBC Sport) man as the only City player.

Clearly, Alan Shearer was left seriously impressed by John Stones, who made his first start of the 2023/2024 season.

Branded as ‘amazing’ by Fernandinho, the Englishman slotted straight into the side in a double pivot alongside Rodri in possession.

The 29-year-old was typically flawless on the ball, whilst also being a reliable figure defensively, every time he was called into action.

So much so that Alan Shearer deemed John Stones’ performance at the level to name him in his Premier League Team of the Week.

“Again, slotted into midfield with ease, showed class on the ball, and he really put himself about in the middle of the park”, he said.

John Stones’ return is a huge positive for Manchester City

Alan Shearer was right to highlight John Stones’ showing as one of the best ones from all the Premier League action as he was top-drawer once again.

Ultimately, many would scoff at the former Everton centre-back’s return as a non-story due to City’s embarrassment of riches at the back.

However, this would be a bizarre perspective considering last season was an insight into how key Stones is to this City side and especially to Guardiola’s current setup.

Not only is the five-time Premier League winner an elite centre-half but the control he provides in midfield and across all phases of play cannot be replicated by many, if any other defender in the world.

As a result, Manchester City, who are set to face the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool amongst several other top teams in the upcoming weeks would be understandably delighted by his return.
