Manchester City have seen numerous players from their squad get linked with moves away from the club during the summer transfer window.

One of those players, for example, is Stefan Ortega, who was mentioned with a move away from the Etihad Stadium earlier in the window.

However, the German ended up signing a one-year contract extension to keep him at the club until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Now though, ahead of the upcoming campaign, Ortega has opened up about his decision to stay with Pep Guardiola’s side and even revealed what one of his fellow City goalkeepers told him behind the scenes about potentially leaving.

Stefan Ortega shares what Scott Carson told him about potential Man City exit

In a recent interview with the Manchester Evening News, Ortega had this to say about his decision to stay at City and sign a new deal with the Blues.

He said: “First of all there is my family. You don’t want to move again, to bring your family into a situation where you have to adapt again. We obviously feel really happy here in Manchester.

“And then like Scott [Carson] told me – the grass isn’t always greener in other places. I think that’s true.

“Obviously I played a lot of games in the last two years, I think I’m not finished here. There’s a lot more to do for me.

“You’re here in one of the best three clubs in the world right now. It’s not easy to leave.”

Ortega staying at City is a good thing for the club

Looking back over the previous season, the German appeared in nine Premier League games, five of which he started.

Having faced 27 shots on target across those nine league matches, Ortega saved 20 of them, leaving him with a higher save percentage than Ederson (74.1% vs 70.7%).

One of those saves came in City’s crucial 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in their penultimate league game of the season.

In fact, this save against Son Heung-min led to Jamie Carragher saying it single-handedly won City the title.

Taking all of that on board, we feel that Carson deserves a lot of thanks for his role in convincing Ortega to stay at the club and sign a contract extension.
