’Stronger than I expected’… Scott Carson was left stunned by the strength of one Man City player last season

Scott Carson has said that he was blown away by the strength of one particular Manchester City player from last season.

As City’s third-choice goalkeeper, the 38-year-old has not seen much action on the pitch, making just two appearances for the Manchester club.

Therefore, the veteran is mostly busy on the training pitch alongside his fellow City teammates.

Now though, Carson has shed some light on a friendly but physical tussle he had with someone he shared the dressing room with last season.

Speaking in the second episode of the Together: Treble Winners documentary series on Netflix, Carson had this to say when asked how he started a mini wrestling match with Ilkay Gundogan at the start of one of last season’s training sessions.

He said: “I don’t even know what it was. I think the one with Gundo was we were just walking out one day and he looked a bit tired and I said ‘you all right, Gundo?’ He said ‘I’m a bit tired,’ and I said ‘you need to wrestle, let’s have a wrestle.’

“To be fair to him, he was a bit stronger than I expected. I thought he’s going to be tapping out in a minute but he had a little bit to be fair.”

Gundogan, who is not known for his strength, then said that he enjoyed the wrestle he had with Carson and put him in the right physical and mental frame of mind to tackle that particular training session.

While featuring in matches isn’t something that the goalkeeper does a lot of the time, it’s good to see that he does whatever he can to help his teammates out in training, even if it is by unusual methods like wrestling.

Back in March 2022, Pep Guardiola shared how much of a significant figure Carson is in the dressing room by describing him as a “very important” member of the squad as well as labelling the chemistry he has with the rest of the players as being “fundamental” to the overall atmosphere and harmony.

With all of that taken into account, we feel that Carson is a prime example of how a player who doesn’t get regular game time can still be so significant for a team.
