Stuart Pearce claims Man City could make ‘classy’ gesture to Alex Ferguson after Man United announcement

Manchester City’s rivalry with Manchester United is one of the most well-known rivalries in English football.

With 54 meetings in the Premier League era with the Red Devils, City have won 20, drawn nine and lost 25.

Since Pep Guardiola took charge of the Blues back in 2016, he has faced off against United on 23 occasions across all competitions, winning 13, drawing two and losing eight.

Even though City have become accustomed to winning Premier League trophies, there used to be a period where their Manchester rivals were the top dogs in England.

Now though, a pundit who has experience managing the Citizens has made a rather interesting suggestion about what the current crop of City players should do for one of United’s most well-known figures.

Stuart Pearce suggests Man City players make financial gesture for Alex Ferguson

Earlier this month, it was reported that Alex Ferguson had left his ambassadorial role at Manchester United following talks with the club in an effort to save them money.

This then led to Stuart Pearce sharing this suggestion on talkSPORT (16/10 17:20) about what the City players could do as a gesture for the former United manager.

He said: “Wouldn’t it be good if the playing squad at Manchester United said we’ll fund that money per season to keep Alex in-post because he’s too important to this football club.

“Then I got a little bit mischievous and I thought to myself wouldn’t it be good if Manchester City players said, do you know what, we’re going to fund Alex Ferguson’s [role]. We’re going to chip in and pay Alex Ferguson’s wages each year to keep him in place for what he’s done for that club across the road, that is going to inspire us on a weekly and yearly basis.

“It’d be classy.”

This isn’t Pearce’s first outrageous suggestion involving City players

The former City manager has shown in the past that he has a knack for crazy ideas, as Pearce chose to play David James as a striker in a City match back in 2005, despite him being a goalkeeper.

To share why City fans probably wouldn’t want to see Guardiola’s pay to keep Ferguson in his former ambassadorial role at United, the Scotsman beat the Blues 26 times out of the 47 games he had in charge of United against them.

Despite that, Enzo Maresca claimed that Guardiola is above Ferguson in terms of being the best-ever Premier League manager.

While Pearce’s suggestion was made in a tongue-in-cheek fashion, it seems likely that a lot of City supporters would laugh away the prospect of seeing their players make such a significant financial gesture for someone who is not connected to the club.
