Paul Dickov has hailed Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez for his attitude and the quality he delivers on the pitch.

The 23-year-old has had a storming start to his second season at the Manchester club after winning the treble at the end of his debut campaign.

Having scored his third Champions League goal of the season in City’s 3-1 win over RB Leipzig, the Argentine has found himself on the end of some significant praise from one pundit and former City player.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Dickov had this to say about Alvarez including current form and the role he’s played in the team so far this season.

He said: “He’s a superstar already. Last season, because of the form of Erling Haaland and obviously Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden being in the team, he maybe didn’t play as much as he wanted to but he always contributed.

“Whether it be starting games, whether it’s coming off the bench, he’s started wide, he’s played as a nine. This season he’s been playing as a 10 just off Haaland and it’s really suited him. His work rate is phenomenal and the quality he’s got in and around the box.

“The one thing about him being in and around the club, it’s his attitude and how he is, how humble he is, how hardworking he is, how he wants to improve, how he’s never spat his dummy out.

“He’d just won the World Cup and then he comes back to sit on the bench for Manchester City and he just gets on with it, he wants to improve all the time. On the pitch, he’s impressed everybody but more so off the pitch, his attitude is the one thing that stands out for everyone at the club.”

With six goals and five assists now under his belt in nine appearances across the Premier League and the Champions League, it’s clear that the attacker, who City paid £14m to sign back in January 2022, has been a vital player for Pep Guardiola’s side in recent weeks.

Last month, after seeing Alvarez score two goals in City’s 3-1 Champions League win over Red Star Belgrade, Guardiola said that not only does the 23-year-old offer an “incredible threat” on the pitch but also that he’s a “lovely guy”, which backs up Dickov’s point about the striker’s impressive personality being as noteworthy as his playing ability.

Moving forward, if the World Cup winner can continue to deliver goal contributions on a regular basis throughout the remainder of the season, he’ll give his side a great chance of winning more silverware and find himself on the end of even more praise.
