‘Surprised’: David James thinks Pep Guardiola did something strange before 3-1 Manchester City win last night

David James has admitted that he was surprised to see Pep Guardiola leave Jeremy Doku out of the starting XI as Manchester City recorded a 3-1 win over Red Star Belgrade.

The comments were made on Manchester City’s Matchday Live show on YouTube (22 minutes in).

So, what did David James say about Pep Guardiola and Jeremy Doku? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well – after the Belgian’s electric display against West Ham – the man who made 100 appearances in goal for Manchester City felt he was unfortunate to be left out, while also comparing the winger to Raheem Sterling.

When asked if Manchester City have ever had a winger like Doku, James said: “I want to say Raheem Sterling. The first game (against Fulham) I thought he tried too hard. I think this game (against West Ham) he looked confident.

The 53-year-old added that he was “surprised” that Guardiola didn’t start his £55.5m signing from Rennes against Red Star Belgrade.

The fact people are already shocked that the 21-year-old is not starting three consecutive matches for Manchester City speaks volumes about just how well the Belgian has adapted.

Jeremy Doku shows his superb attitude at Manchester City

If anything, Doku being left out of the starting XI by Guardiola last night will act as a strong reminder that nobody is guaranteed a place in the lineup at Manchester City – rotation will occur regardless of form.

However – while the Belgium international would have had every right to be disappointed – he showed his excellent attitude by helping to change the game, after replacing Bernardo Silva in the 44th minute.

As WhoScored shows, Doku completed four successful dribbles – more than any other player on the pitch – with his constant desire to run at Red Star Belgrade opening up space for his teammates to strike.

Clearly, Guardiola has a dangerous weapon on his hands, whether he starts the Belgian speedster or brings him on as a substitute.
