Marc Cucurella is now likely to leave Stamford Bridge in January 2024 – after Manchester City made a bid for the Chelsea No.3 in January 2023.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano.

So, what is the situation involving Manchester City and Marc Cucurella? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the Citizens tried to sign the Spaniard before he joined Chelsea in a £63m deal back in August 2022 – as detailed by The Athletic.

Despite a shaky six months for Cucurella at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea struggled, Pep Guardiola still made another attempt to sign the left-back in January 2023, according to Romano.

Speaking on YouTube, the reliable Italian journalist said: “For Marc Cucurella, there was something even in January. From what I was told, and this is exclusive information – something behind the scenes – in January 2023, Manchester City secretly presented a proposal for Cucurella.

“It was a loan with a buy option. It was rejected by Chelsea.”

Now, Romano has provided an update on the situation.

It is said that Cucurella is going to search for a new club in January if Mauricio Pochettino continues to overlook him, which seems likely based on the 2023/24 campaign so far.

Writing for Caught Offside, Romano stated: “Chelsea deny players being frozen out. Again, the feeling is that both Chalobah and Cucurella are set to look for new clubs in January if they can’t play in the next months.”

The 25-year-old has not played a single minute of Premier League football this season, and came close to joining Manchester United on loan before Erik ten Hag signed Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham instead.

Do Manchester City even need Marc Cucurella?

In our view, it was a surprise to hear that Guardiola made another move for Cucurella in January 2023.

The Spain international has struggled tremendously at Chelsea, and it surely wouldn’t make much sense to bring him to the Etihad Stadium unless the Blues accept a heavily reduced sum.

Ultimately, Guardiola knows best, and the fact that the 52-year-old seems determined to sign Cucurella suggests it may be a deal worth doing, at the right price.
