Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth has suggested that Kyle Walker could still end up signing a new deal at Manchester City despite interest from Bayern Munich.
Recent days have seen reports emerge claiming that the Englishman has verbally agreed to join the German side this summer, with a deal between the two clubs all that’s needed to make it happen.
Despite that, one journalist has shared some behind-the-scenes information which should encourage any City fans hoping to see the 33-year-old stay at the Etihad Stadium.
Walker future still open
Speaking in a recent edition of Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast, Sheth had this to say about the current situation surrounding Walker and his future.
He said: “Sky Germany are reporting that Kyle Walker has effectively told Pep Guardiola ‘I want to go to Bayern Munich,’ whereas the noises we’re getting is it hasn’t gone that far yet.
“It could yet happen, he could yet stay, he could yet sign a new contract at Manchester City. So it seems that all options are still available for Kyle Walker but obviously, if he was to go that is a big-name signing that would be leaving.”
Last season saw the full-back make 39 appearances for the Blues across all competitions, showcasing how important he can be for the team in the big occasions, specifically in their Champions League semi-final clashes against Real Madrid where he handled Vinicius Junior with ease.
Speaking in a recent press conference, Guardiola revealed that he has spoken with Walker about his future but didn’t specify about what the defender told him or what his next step is likely to be.
With reports claiming the Citizens have been willing to offer the full-back a new deal to keep him at the club, this shows how much they value him and would rather see him stay where he is rather than join a side such as Bayern who will undoubtedly be looking to stop City from regaining the Champions League next season.
Moving forward, if what Sheth said in this podcast is accurate and there is still a chance that the England international could turn down a move to Bayern and continue or even extend his stay with the treble winners, we feel that this should be a top priority for the club behind the scenes.
