Manchester City are set to see a big change take place behind the scenes at the club this summer.
Earlier this month, David Ornstein reported that Txiki Begiristain will be leaving City at the end of the season.
Having been the club’s sporting director since 2012, the 60-year-old has been involved in a wide range of transfer deals that have seen multiple players make moves in and out of the Etihad Stadium.
Following that news, it was reported that City had agreed a deal to see Hugo Viana replace Begiristain, which the club later confirmed in an announcement shared on their official website.
Assuming that Begiristain may still be involved in some potential transfer deals in the next summer transfer window before leaving City, he could end up missing out on one particular player who has been on the club’s radar recently.

Man City behind two clubs in race to sign Florian Wirtz
According to a recent report from Give Me Sport, City and Arsenal are behind Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the transfer race to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz.
The report also adds that the German is likely to leave Leverkusen in the summer but is more likely to end up joining Bayern or Real rather than City or Arsenal.
More specifically, the report claims that Bayern is the most likely destination for Wirtz, followed by Real, then City and then Arsenal.
How much could Wirtz cost City to sign?
Back in April, Leverkusen’s chief executive Fernando Carro told Radio Marca (via 90Min) that the German club would only sell Wirtz for €150m (£125m).
Having scored 47 goals and delivered 51 assists in 162 games for Leverkusen, it’s easy to see why there’s such a big price tag on him and why he has four major European clubs looking to sign him.
Even though Pep Guardiola’s side are apparently behind Bayern and Real in the race to sign the 21-year-old as things stand, this could be a potential move that the combined power of Begiristain and Viana look to secure before the 60-year-old brings an end to what will be his 13-year spell at City.
