Liverpool reportedly have Manchester City midfielder, Kalvin Phillips, as one of their midfield transfer targets for this summer.
After it was reported that Fabinho could be on his way to Saudi Arabia, having been in talks with Al-Ittihad, some details have emerged regarding which players the Merseyside club see as being potential replacements for the Brazilian.
In a recent Twitter post, Liverpool journalist James Pearce had this to say on the matter.
He said: “In terms of replacing Fabinho, Moises Caicedo is not viewed as a serious option with the Brighton midfielder expected to join Chelsea. Romeo Lavia, Sofyan Amrabat, Ryan Gravenberch and Kalvin Phillips are among those under consideration. #LFC.”
Phillips’ first season at City
The Englishman has only spent one year at the Manchester club after arriving from Leeds United last summer in a deal worth a reported fee of £45m.
Across his debut season at the Etihad Stadium, the 27-year-old made 21 appearances across all competitions but only started four of them.
Clearly being nowhere near the top of Pep Guardiola’s pecking order, this could be why Liverpool see him as a transfer target and a potential replacement for Fabinho.
However, with Phillips sharing his determination to stay with the Citizens and fight for a regular spot in the team, this could make securing a transfer move for him difficult for Liverpool, especially if City have no intention of letting him go.
Moving forward, we feel that it would be better for Liverpool if they forgot about trying to land a deal for the England international and focus on landing a deal for any of the other players listed in Pearce’s post.
