Wayne Rooney has shared his thoughts on the upcoming Manchester derby.

March is set to be a massive month for Manchester City which could determine just how successful Pep Guardiola’s side end up being come the end of the season.

City take on Newcastle United for a place in the FA Cup semi-finals, can secure passage to the final eight of the Champions League by defeating FC Copenhagen and have massive fixtures in the Premier League.

The Blues will face their biggest title rivals Liverpool and Arsenal but things kick off with the small matter of the Manchester derby on Sunday.

City go into the game in great form having not lost a match since December 6 and have recovered well after being held to a draw by Chelsea.

Since the stalemate, City have secured narrow 1-0 wins over Brentford and Bournemouth and returned to their free-scoring best with a 6-2 win over Luton Town on Tuesday.

Manchester United have also had a strong start to 2024 but were rocked last weekend after a 2-1 defeat to Fulham.

Wayner Rooney expects a difficult game for his former club.

Wayne Rooney’s derby prediction

Speaking on the BBC, Rooney shared his thoughts on the derby and didn’t sound optimistic about his former club’s chances.

He said: “It’s a very difficult game. City are a fantastic team and it’s a big challenge for Man United coming up.”

Man City vs Manchester United prediction

It’s hard to see anything but a win for Manchester City on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s side may have picked up some promising results at the start of 2024 but there has been little improvement in performances.

United were lucky to scrape past Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup and were deservedly beaten by Fulham.

If they leave themselves as open in midfield as they did in those games, Guardiola’s side should win by a landslide.
