‘Vital’… Alan Shearer says one Man City player ‘didn’t go unnoticed’ in Luton win

Alan Shearer has praised Rodri for his contribution in Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Luton Town on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s side got back on track in the Premier League with a narrow victory at Kenilworth Road.

The result was always going to be the most important thing, and City showed good character to come from behind after Elijah Adebayo had scored against the run of play.

City didn’t panic, and in the second-half turned the game around with goals from Bernardo Silva and then Jack Grealish.

Bernardo Silva was named man of the match on Sunday for his fine performance, with Sky commentator Alan Smith branding the star ‘inventive’. BBC pundit Garth Crooks also said that Bernardo had ‘ran the show’.

It was a fine finish from the Portuguese, curling the ball into the far corner.

But it was Rodri who made the goal, advancing the ball into the penalty area. The Spaniard skipped away from one Luton player and drove inside, before being stopped in his tracks by Tom Lockyer.

The ball then fell at the feet of Bernardo who provided the finish.

Selecting the midfielder in his latest Team of the Week, Shearer said (Premier League official): “His presence in Man City’s midfield is vital, and the driving run for Bernardo Silva’s equaliser didn’t go unnoticed.”

Rodri had returned to the starting XI, after sitting out the defeat to Aston Villa in midweek through suspension.

Another huge Rodri contribution

Luton, to their credit, made life difficult for City on Sunday.

After going ahead, it was in their interests to try and defend their lead and they had men behind the ball for most of the second-half.

It was going to take a bit of bravery and invention from City to breach the Hatters, and £220,000-a-week star Rodri was the man to provide it.

He spotted the space to run into and showed good footwork to get away from his marker before making a beeline for the box.

Perhaps there was an element of fortune with the way the ball fell at Bernardo’s feet, but it was great play from Rodri, who continues to show how crucial he is to this team.
