Phil Foden has highlighted one thing Manchester City need to do on the pitch more.

After seeing off Urawa Red Diamonds with a 3-0 scoreline on Tuesday in the semi-final of the FIFA Club World Cup, the Citizens will take on Brazilian side Fluminense this evening in the final.

Having been on a disappointing run of form in the Premier League prior to their involvement in this competition in Saudi Arabia, Pep Guardiola’s side have the chance to add some more silverware to their cabinet and get a positive vibe around them before resuming their domestic matches.

With tonight’s final in mind, one City player has spoken out about what the team must do in order to make sure they are successful moving forward.

Speaking to the club’s official website ahead of tonight’s final, Foden had this to say about what the team need to do more on the pitch.

He said: “I think we need to do a longer build-up, keep the ball and take our chances to attack. I thought we did that in the second half on Tuesday when they got tired, and the spaces opened up. We just want to keep going now.”

Looking back over Tuesday’s semi-final victory, the Citizens ended up having 74% possession with 25 attempts at goal in total, nine of which were on target.

With 17 Premier League games played in this campaign, the Blues have registered the highest average possession percentage (62.6%) and the highest rate of goal-creating actions per 90 minutes (4.12).

However, with the Citizens already conceding 20 league goals when they only conceded 33 throughout their entire campaign last term, it’s easy to see why Foden thinks his side should take more care of the ball and be more in control of when they take their chances to score.
