Shay Given has sent a congratulatory message to John Stones about being selected in the 2022/2023 PFA Team of the Season.

The pundit commented on the £47.5 million (Sky Sports) man’s Instagram post celebrating his triumph.

Shay Given says John Stones ‘deserved’ PFA Team of the Season spot

Branded as ‘amazing’ by Fernandinho, the 29-year-old was one of the Sky Blues’ most key performers during their treble-winning campaign.

Operating in his one-of-a-kind hybrid role between centre-back or right-back and in central midfield, the Englishman had one of the finest individual seasons a defender has in recent memory.

When John Stones took to Instagram to express his delight at being picked in the PFA Team of the Season, Shay Given replied, “Congratulations, Stonesy man and well deserved too.”

The five-time Premier League winner was selected in the XI alongside fellow Manchester City teammates such as Ruben Dias, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland.

Arsenal were the other club that dominated the selections with the likes of Aaron Ramsdale, William Saliba, Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka in the side, while Harry Kane and Kieran Trippier also made the cut.

John Stones is finally getting the credit he deserves

Shay Given is right in emphasising that the decorated centre-half was a well-deserved pick in the PFA Team of the Season.

Despite having operated at the elite level for a number of years, his performances did not get highlighted as much as they merited for either club or country in the past.

Whether that stems from Stones’ ropey start to life at City or his understated demeanour, which is not often associated with elite defenders is a mystery.

But after thriving in what is now widely known as the ‘John Stones role’ and winning the treble, many are waking up to the fact that he is a truly special footballer.
