A number of Ajax players have crowned Manchester City legend Ilkay Gundogan as the most underrated player the game has ever seen.

Clearly, the majority of players at Ajax reckon there has been no player in the history of football more underrated than Ilkay Gundogan.
Ajax players name Manchester City icon Ilkay Gundogan as the most underrated player ever
Branded as a ‘legend’ by Jack Grealish, the now-Barcelona midfielder has only got the credit he deserves in recent years, and this usually coincides with periods where he is in the goals.
But for most of his time at City in particular, it would be fair to claim that the treble-winning captain has often not been lauded due to his understated demeanour both on and off the pitch.
While names like Toni Kroos, Marco Veratti, Luka Modric and Paul Scholes were mentioned as the most underrated player of all time, Ilkay Gundogan dominated the votes amongst the players at Ajax.

As most of the players in the video just named the German international and walked off, Davy Klassen lauded Christian Rasmussen’s pick by saying, “Yeah, yeah, Gundogan. Well done.”
Ilkay Gundogan seems to finally be getting the plaudits he deserves
For a player who has largely been criminally underrated by the masses, it is lovely to see Ilkay Gundogan get a special mention from a majority of the Ajax team.
Last season was yet another reminder of how much of a maestro the five-time Premier League winner remains in the middle of the park, while also being one of the most clutch midfielders the game has seen.
Despite not fitting the mould of a traditional captain, Gundogan also showcased his excellent leadership by donning the armband as Guardiola and Co. lifted the treble, which merits praise for years to come.
