Kalvin Phillips is leaving Manchester City 18 months after signing, but the player doesn’t have any ill feelings about his time at the Etihad Stadium.
An agreement was reached on Tuesday between City and West Ham United for the player to spend the rest of the season on loan at the London Stadium.
The Hammers will cover his whole salary and pay City a loan fee, and there will then be an option to buy the player in the summer for around £34 million.
It is a move Phillips really needed. He once again failed to get regular minutes at the Etihad, despite there being some golden opportunities for him to play – like when Rodri was suspended for three games after getting a red card against Nottingham Forest.
But Phillips was firmly rooted to the bench, and a January exit was always going to be likely.
Despite his struggles, Phillips will depart the club with a positive mindset…
Kalvin Phillips feels he’s leaving Manchester City a much better player, ahead of West Ham loan move

The Daily Mail have produced a detailed report about Phillips and how his exit has come about.
The 28-year-old unfortunately just didn’t cut the mustard at the Etihad, and it is right for all parties that he leaves on loan.
One would have thought the player would perhaps have some regrets about such a disappointing stint, but Phillips does not view his time at City in a negative light.
According to the Mail, Phillips ‘genuinely believes’ that he is leaving the club as a better player, despite not playing many games.
The publication also include a quote from one source that said: “Kalvin doesn’t have any regrets about the move.”
Ultimately, Phillips was surrounded by world-class players day in, day out and he will surely have learned a huge amount by simply training with them.
Phillips will have learned so much
It is good that Phillips views his time at City positively.
He will have undoubtedly been frustrated a lot of the time, but Phillips will have learned so much just on the training ground.
Rubbing shoulders with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri and Bernardo Silva and being given instructions by potentially the greatest manager in the history of the sport in Pep Guardiola is bound to further your development.
We will now see if Phillips can put everything he’s seen and heard into practice for West Ham.
Guardiola didn’t deem him good enough at the Etihad, but Moyes has swooped for him and clearly believes he can offer a lot.
