Manchester City Football Club are now a trophy-winning machine, with the financial takeover back in 2008 ultimately paving the way for an ongoing period of dominance.
Prior to then though, City already had a fair few trophies in the cabinet, and are today one of the most decorated clubs in English football.
First Division titles/Premier Leagues – 7
City were Champions of England on two occasions during the 20th century, winning the First Division title for the first time back in 1936/37.
A second would follow 1967/68, but the ‘Champions of England’ tag wouldn’t arrive again until 2011/12.
City won their first-ever Premier League title in May 2012 in the most dramatic fashion – Sergio Aguero scoring on 93:20 against Queens Park Rangers to snatch the title away from bitter rivals Manchester United.
Four more Premier League titles have followed since that incredible moment, with current manager Pep Guardiola delivering three of those.
FA Cups – 6
City missed out on the FA Cup this year after losing to Chelsea at the semi-final stage, but the club have triumphed in the competition on six occasions so far.
The first win came all the way back in 1904, with Billy Meredith grabbing the only goal against Bolton Wanderers. That was the club’s first major honour.
The club then won in it in 1934, 1956 and 1969 before going on a rather long drought.
Yaya Toure was the man who got the goal against Stoke City in the 2011 final to deliver the first trophy following the 2008 takeover.
League Cups – 8
City’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley in the 2021 final meant that no club has won the trophy more times.
They are now level with Liverpool, and have triumphed in the competition for four seasons running and won it six times since the takeover.
Charity Shields – 6
Not the biggest prize in football, sure, but City have definitely won their fair share of Charity Shields down the years.
They’ve scooped six, the most recent triumphs coming in 2012, 2018 and 2019.
City will go in pursuit of a seventh when they face FA Cup winners Leicester City at Wembley ahead of the 2021/22 season.
European Cup Winners’ Cup – 1
City’s only success in Europe to date is the triumph in the European Cup Winners’ Cup final back in 1970.
It was a 2-0 victory over Polish outfit Gornik Zabrze, with Neil Young and Franny Lee grabbing the goals in Vienna.
Many a City fan will be desperate the team can do the business in Portugal against Chelsea and land the grandest prize of all; the Champions League.
