Why Manchester City will be delighted by £15m Aston Villa player’s performances this season

Back in July 2019, Manchester City sold Douglas Luiz to Aston Villa in a deal which included a number of clauses.

Pep Guardiola’s side agreed to let the Brazilian depart for Villa Park in a £15m deal on the basis that the Villans agreed to a temporary buyback option, in addition to another clause.

The buyback for Douglas Luiz has since expired, and while that is a shame, there is one reason why his excellent performances this season bode well for Manchester City

What’s the story?

Well, Manchester City also negotiated a sell-on clause in the agreement with Aston Villa.

That is according to David Ornstein of The Athletic, although the exact percentage was not disclosed.

As things stand, Luiz is surely attracting plenty of interest from top European sides with his superb displays, and if he keeps it up, Manchester City could soon receive a welcome cash injection as a result of this sell-on clause.

The Aston Villa No.6 has already scored three goals in just nine appearances this season, which is a solid return for a holding midfielder.

However – goals aside – the Brazilian’s composure and control of the midfield is seriously catching the eye.

Douglas Luiz could make Manchester City millions

Last time out, Luiz was simply incredible as Unai Emery’s side recorded a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, making a mockery of the £115m Moises Caicedo on his own patch.

As WhoScored shows, the South American registered 75 touches – no player on the pitch had more.

Luiz also showed his industrial side with two successful tackles and two clearances, while also making one interception and a block.

Furthermore, Aston Villa are competing in this season’s UEFA Conference League, a stage where Declan Rice turned himself into a £105m midfielder by helping West Ham go all the way last term.

Should Luiz do something similar and earn himself a massive move, then Manchester City could soon receive a tidy influx of cash thanks to the sell-on clause.
