Why Pep Guardiola shouted at Rico Lewis in Manchester City 3-0 BSC Young Boys

Rico Lewis was handed a sixth start of the season by Pep Guardiola on Tuesday as Manchester City recorded a 3-0 win over BSC Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League.

The 18-year-old has now become a valued member of the first team at the Etihad Stadium, and as a result, receives the same brutal treatment from his boss if things go wrong, as the teenager has now found out after a rollocking from the Spaniard.

So, why did Pep Guardiola shout at Rico Lewis? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the 52-year-old was not happy after the Manchester City No.82 caused an attack to break down.

As also spotted by the Manchester Evening News, Guardiola shouted over to Lewis from the opposite side of the pitch to express his frustration at the teenager’s decision making on one occasion.

The England Under-21 international held a hand up to apologise, but that was not enough for the Santpedor-born tactician, who continued to gesticulate on the touchline.

Ultimately, we probably see at least one incident like this involving Guardiola on a weekly basis – it is unlikely to have any serious repercussions for Lewis.

The Spaniard is simply a perfectionist and demands a lot from his players – something Lewis, who still can’t believe how much Guardiola trusts him, will now be all too aware of.

How Rico Lewis performed in Manchester City 3-0 BSC Young Boys

Putting that one error aside, Lewis delivered another outstanding performance for Manchester City against BSC Young Boys.

As WhoScored shows, the Bury-born wonderkid provided five key passes. Only Jack Grealish made more with seven.

Lewis – who praised Phil Foden before the game – also had one shot on target and registered a pass success rate of 92.5% against the Swiss side.

It also spoke volumes that Guardiola left the City Football Academy graduate on for the entire 90 minutes.

The Spaniard clearly likes Lewis, and hopefully, the youngster understands that any hammering he receives from his boss is purely for his own good, rather than to knock him down.
