Manchester City have closed the gap at the top of the Premier League table to just two points, as Pep Guardiola’s side beat Brentford tonight.
City continued their fine form in 2024, making it five wins out of five in all competitions.
Phil Foden was the star of the show this evening, hitting a hat-trick at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Bees actually took the lead in the game, with Neal Maupay scoring after some poor defending from City. Mark Flekken’s goal kick found the striker, who latched onto the ball before slotting past Ederson.
But just before half-time Foden equalised for City, before turning on the style in the second-half.
Alan Smith raves over Phil Foden as star hits hat-trick for Manchester City against Brentford

After scoring the equaliser, Foden then popped up early in the second half to score with a glancing header from a perfect Kevin De Bruyne cross.
Foden’s third came after a nice little lay-off from Erling Haaland, with the 24-year-old finishing clinically into the bottom corner.
Foden once again shone playing in a central role, and has now scored 14 goals across all competitions this season.
He was named Man of the Match by Sky commentator Alan Smith, who said of the star: “A lot of City players have been excellent, but when you score a hat-trick, you’ve got to get the award, you really have. Phil Foden is enjoying a wonderful season, in a wonderful team.”
Foden shines again
Yet again, Foden – whom Pep Guardiola recently suggested had become more of a matchwinner for City -was the star of the show for Manchester City.
The midfielder was just brilliant operating between the lines in the middle, and continued to shine even with Kevin De Bruyne and Julen Alvarez operating in similar spaces.
He is becoming a serious, serious player now, as many expected him to be.
It’s fantastic to see Foden becoming more potent as well – he needs just one more goal this season to match his tally from last season, and two more to match the 16 he got in the 2020/21 season
