Micah Richards has shared his verdict on who he thinks is a better manager out of Pep Guardiola and Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Spaniard ended 2023 with five major titles added to his already impressive trophy haul during his time with the Manchester club.

This has since led to one pundit and former City player sharing his thoughts on how the 52-year-old compares in terms of managerial quality to Ferguson.

Speaking in a recent episode of The Rest Is Football, Richards had this to say when asked if Guardiola is the greatest manager of all time.

He said: “In the modern era, yes. His Barcelona side, he won the treble with them. I just believe he evolved the game so much and that’s no disrespect to the other managers.

“I really like Sir Alex Ferguson, I really liked the way he could galvanise his teams and you always knew something special was going to happen and the fight until the end and that’s coming from someone who played for City.

“So Ferguson was always my number one from my era, but just the way the game has transformed, I would have to say Pep.”

During his 27 years in charge of the Red Devils, Ferguson won 884 of the 1476 games he overlooked, picking up numerous trophies including 13 Premier Leagues, five FA Cups and two Champions Leagues.

With Guardiola now having won 14 major titles during his seven-and-a-half-years at the Etihad Stadium, it’s understandable why he has now been considered by Richards to be the greatest manager of the modern era.

Even though the Spaniard’s contract at City is set to expire next year, if the club can get him to sign a new deal and stay where he is for a considerable amount of time and win more trophies, this would surely increase his reputation as being one of the best managers English football has ever had.
