Jermain Defoe has revealed that he was left surprised after hearing how Rodri speaks.
Often, the discourse around the Spanish international is regarding his importance to Manchester City, with Liam Rosenior claiming that Pep Guardiola must consider him a more key player to his side than even Kevin De Bruyne.
Even Ruben Dias hailed the 27-year-old for his knack of stepping up for City when all eyes are on which of their superstars will make their mark when they are down and out.
Jermain Defoe left stunned by how Rodri speaks
Aymeric Laporte also highlighted that during his debut season at the Etihad Stadium, Rodri struggled to adapt to his role as the side’s go-to defensive midfielder.
But the former Manchester City centre-back believes that the three-time Premier League winner has evolved into the best player in the world in his position.
However, Jermain Defoe honed in on how pleasantly surprised he was after hearing Rodri speak.
“I’ve had a few surprises where I’ve listened to an interview, like Rodri”, he said on the Defoe & Deeney Football Firsts podcast.

“Have you heard him speak? I was like wow, the way he speaks and stuff, like it’s amazing, it’s class.”
Troy Deeney replied, “Everything about him, he’s got that authority as well.”
Jermain Defoe said, “Yeah, that presence and you speak about honesty as a player, he’s honest.”
Rodri is the perfect representative of his club
Jermain Defoe raises an interesting point as Rodri always comes across as a class act when he speaks to the press, whether it be during post-match interviews or a press conference.
The £63 million (Independent) man always comes across as honest, eloquent and analytical during his assessment of games, in particular.
Off the pitch in general, one has rarely ever heard a bad word about the midfield maestro, who seems to not create unnecessary headlines.
Instead, Rodri carries himself like a model representative of Manchester City, whether it be on the pitch, during interviews or off the pitch as well.
The ex-Villareal midfielder is the perfect role model, in our view and perhaps his seemingly professional attitude has played a huge role in the career he has had.
