Chelsea legend John Terry has been left amazed by a former Manchester City player in the Champions League.

Europe’s top competition returned for its long-awaited knock-out stage on Tuesday evening with City getting off to a winning start in their last 16 tie against FC Copenhagen.

First half goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva either side of a Magnus Mattsson equaliser put City ahead before Phil Foden struck at the death to secure a 3-1 win.

In the other match of the night, Real Madrid also picked up an away win as they overcame RB Leipzig 1-0.

Former City playmaker Brahim Diaz got the only goal of the game and what a stunning one it was.

The Spaniard picked up the ball on the right, ghosted past two challenges as he drove inside before curling the ball into the net. Terry was left stunned by the strike.

John Terry left amazed by Brahim Diaz

The retied centre-back posted on X: “Wow.

“That’s one of the best goals I have seen in a long time.

“Brahim Diaz,” he concluded with a clapping and football emoji.

Could Man City begin to regret Brahim Diaz sale?

Not many eyebrows were raised when City allowed Diaz to return to Real Madrid in 2019, a £15.5m transfer fee for a player with just 413 first team minutes is nothing to be sniffed at.

Diaz was very highly rated by the club and Pep Guardiola, given he did manage to make 15 appearances for the Blues boss.

But with so much talent ahead of him like De Bruyne and David Silva, not to mention the emergence of a certain Foden, it’s easy to see why he wasn’t deemed a great loss.

Diaz went on to spend three years on loan at AC Milan and played well in Italy, contributing to the side’s Serie A title win in 2022.

However, a future at Madrid still looked unlikely. That is, until this season.

Carlo Ancelotti has utilised the versatile forward as a squad player and Diaz has given 11 goal contributions in return.

The best of the lot came against Leipzig as Los Blancos picked up a vital first win in their last 16 tie.

If Diaz continues to impress he will look even more like a player who would fit in nicely at City but it’s highly unlikely he would have got there if he didn’t leave.
