Ahead of Manchester City’s 3-0 win against Urawa Red Diamonds, Shaun Wright-Phillips admitted he was surprised by Matheus Nunes’ pace.

When quizzed about Nunes’ start to life at the Etihad Stadium, the pundit singled out his speed as one of his standout traits on City’s official pre-match show on their YouTube channel.

After Manchester City qualified for the Club World Cup final, Rodri also praised him as a “very good player.”

Shaun Wright-Phillips left stunned by how quick Matheus Nunes is

It seems like the £53 million (Sky Sports) man’s performance against the Japanese side caught the eye, with Joleon Lescott hailing his display as “impressive.”

Robbie Savage also claimed that the former Wolves midfielder “played really well” on Tuesday.

Shaun Wright-Phillips discussed Matheus Nunes’ pace, saying, “I think he’s got some fantastic attributes. I didn’t realise how quick he was until the weekend when I saw him ghost down the line.”

“I was like, ‘Wow, he’s got some strides on him there!’ He complements all the other players well, I think his first few games when he came, you saw how his football IQ was almost there already”, he said on Manchester City’s official pre-match show on YouTube.

Matheus Nunes must be one of the fastest midfielders in the world

The fact Shaun Wright-Phillips, who was renowned for his pace during his playing days recognises how quick Matheus Nunes is emphasises just how rapid he is.

Much is made of the Portuguese international’s ability to carry the ball from the middle of the park.

However, the pace at which the 25-year-old manages to do so is quite unique.

Even in the build-up to City’s opener, how quickly Matheus Nunes was able to cover ground to reach Bernardo Silva’s pass to him right before Marius Høibråten’s own goal was an impressive sight.

This very trait allows Nunes to leave defenders for dead as he can drive forward with the ball at full speed over large distances.

One would argue that Matheus Nunes could be the quickest ball-carrying midfielder in the world, which is a huge bonus for Manchester City.

Perhaps this characteristic is one of the many reasons why City decided to sign him in the summer.
