‘You just thought let’s get a big headline’ – Jamie Carragher fires back at Pep Guardiola

Jamie Carragher took to his official X account late on Saturday night to set the record straight with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City have endured a really tough 2024/25 campaign on all fronts and Pep Guardiola is a man under huge pressure, despite all the glory he’s brought to The Ethiad.

Wednesday night’s defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League rubbed salt into Pep’s gaping wounds, and rumours have since emerged that his position as Man City boss is actually ‘delicate’ right now.

Jamie Carragher joked that Erling Haaland was scared about coming up against Antonio Rudiger on Wednesday night, and that’s why he didn’t start the match:

“So let me work this out. Haaland’s gone to the manager this morning and said ‘I’m not fit’. Do you think that’s got something with Rudiger? Because Rudiger’s playing?

“I never went to see the manager in the morning and said ‘I’m not fit’… Are we saying this injury is Rudigeritis?”

Everyone who saw Carragher say that knew he was joking.

In fact, anyone who is familiar with the Champions League setup on CBS will know full well that the entire show is based around humour and sarcasm.

However, Pep clearly isn’t familiar with their setup, and neither is one Mirror journalist…apparently!

Jamie Carragher fires back at Pep Guardiola

The well-renowned football pundit always uses his X platform to correct any wrongs against him.

And he did exactly that once again after Pep Guardiola responded to a journalist about Carragher’s comments on Haaland and Rudiger.

Mirror journalist Simon Mullock relayed to Pep what Carragher had said, without making it clear to the Man City manager that the former Liverpool man had made the comments heavily layered in jest.

And Carragher took to X to clear up the matter once and for all:

Fair play to Jamie Carragher for clearing up his comments, and hopefully Pep Guardiola will understand that he was joking, and nothing more.

Carragher’s Haaland comments a real storm in a teacup

Erling Haaland is well known for relishing coming up against physical central defenders.

And you now what? More often than not he gets the better of them.

Anyone who saw Carragher’s comments, or even purely read them, and didn’t think he said them without a hint of jest simply doesn’t understand football.

Either that or they are completely devoid of any kind of sense of humour.

Jamie Carragher has praised Erling Haaland to the hilt on numerous occasions before, and Pep Guardiola surely knows that.
