Manchester City are in a wonderful position to make the semi-finals of the Champions League, after beating Bayern Munich 3-0 last night.

The Citizens put in one of their best displays of the season against the German giants at the Etihad Stadium.

City went ahead in the first-half through a sublime strike from Rodri from distance.

In the second-half, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland both scored to put City in a commanding position in the tie.

3-0 seems like a dominant scoreline. But Bayern were by no means poor and did threaten Ederson a number of times.

But City were relentless and clinical, and are now in an amazing position to go on and make the last four in the competition.

City were brutal in the final third.

But key to winning this game was the solidity of the defence. Ederson, Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake and John Stones in his hybrid role were all excellent on the night.

The BT sport punditry team of Rio Ferdinand, Joleon Lescott and Owen Hargreaves all raved about the City defence after the game.

They noted how every one of them took pride in what they were doing.

It was fantastic to see, and it is very encouraging how strong they’re now looking at the back going into a huge period of the season.

Ake was among those to post. He said: “Enjoyed that. Big one next week!”

The Netherlands international was hailed in the comments by fans after yet another brilliant display by him.

Also impressed by Ake was former City star Oleksandr Zinchenko, the man Ake has essentially replaced.

Zinchenko comments on Ake’s Instagram post after 3-0 win over Bayern.

The Arsenal player commented ‘top bro’, indicating he has a big respect for his former teammate. He also left a few clapping emojis.

Ake’s £41 million transfer from Bournemouth raised eyebrows at the time.

But this season, he has been one of City’s best players. He looks every inch a top-class defender, and that’s wherever he plays in the backline, too.
