Roberto De Zerbi – who has been tipped to replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City – has now held talks with Real Madrid.

That is according to SPORT in Spain.

So, what is the latest on Roberto De Zerbi? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, it was Davide Chinellato – an Italian journalist – who claimed that speculation about his fellow countryman replacing Guardiola was “gaining ground” around the Etihad Stadium.

Sam Lee – Manchester City’s correspondent for The Athletic – also suggested that De Zerbi could replace the Spaniard.

Guardiola is expected to leave Manchester City when his contract expires in 2025 – according to both the Guardian and ESPN.

Now – however – Manchester City could miss out on De Zerbi to Real Madrid.

SPORT believe the 44-year-old has just spoken to the Spanish giants, who are on the hunt to replace Carlo Ancelotti ahead of his contract expiring at the end of the season.

The 64-year-old is not expected to sign a new deal as he aims to take over Brazil.

SPORT add that De Zerbi is open to managing Real Madrid, and the Italian is wanted due to his talent in working with young footballers – the Spanish giants believe he is the perfect coach to steer the likes of Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga to greatness.

Timing is not ideal for Manchester City as Real Madrid speak to De Zerbi

If Guardiola’s contract was also expiring at the end of this season – like Ancelotti’s deal – then it would be easier for Manchester City to get involved in the race to hire De Zerbi now.

However, Real Madrid are in a better position to pinch the Italian, whereas Manchester City must wait and see what Guardiola decides to do in 2025 – he could even sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Of course, no Manchester City fan will complain about missing out on De Zerbi if Guardiola decides to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium.

However, if the 52-year-old opts to depart, then Txiki Begiristain may have to find someone other than the Italian to take over, as Real Madrid begin negotiations.
