Manchester City are used to being linked with transfer moves for players across Europe.
Some of the players City have signed for significant transfer fees from various European clubs over recent years include Jeremy Doku, Savinho and Josko Gvardiol to name a few.
Another high-profile player Pep Guardiola’s side brought to the Etihad Stadium in recent memory is Erling Haaland.
Signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 for a fee of £51m, the striker has gone on to make 112 appearances for the club prior to City’s Champions League match against Sporting CP.
With 104 goals and multiple trophies to his name since his arrival at the club, it’s safe to say the striker has been a top signing for them.
However, a former Premier League star has made a claim concerning the City star and another player who has found himself on the Manchester club’s transfer radar.

Rafael van der Vaart makes Viktor Gyokeres comparison to Erling Haaland
Speaking on Rondo, Rafael van der Vaart said this about Viktor Gyokeres and how he compares to Haaland.
He said: “It sounds a bit crazy, but I think he’s a bit of a better version of Haaland. Haaland is of course incredible, but Gyokeres has a bit more, or something.”
Man City linked with 2025 move for Gyokeres
Last month, it was reported that City are interested in Gyokeres, who has an agreement that he can leave Sporting in the summer for a fee of €60m-€70m (£50m-£58m).
Since joining the Portuguese club back in the 2023 summer transfer window from Coventry City, the 26-year-old has bagged 63 goals in 66 matches across all competitions prior to the match against the Blues.
| 2024/25 | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| Erling Haaland | 14 | 14 | 0 |
| Viktor Gyokeres | 16 | 20 | 4 |
While both strikers have proved themselves to be two of Europe’s best, it may be difficult to convince any City supporter that there is one better than Haaland at the moment.
However, given how impressive Gyokeres has been since arriving in Portugal, he deserves credit as well.
Moving forward, with City only having Haaland as the main striker in their squad, it’ll be interesting to see what happens if they end up landing a deal for Gyokeres in the summer.
