£60m striker who’s been on Man City’s radar is now available for loan – and he could really help Guardiola

Manchester City have several issues at the moment, but one is the fact that Erling Haaland is the only attacking player who is scoring regularly.

Manchester City’s defensive woes have been well-documented, but unfortunately, Haaland is a bit of a one-man band at the moment when it comes to scoring Premier League goals.

He started the season on fire, but has now got two in his last seven in the league, meaning the focus is shifting more onto his teammates’ lack of contributions.

It is potentially going to be a very interesting January window.

Many fans are expecting one or two signings this time around, which is not normally something the club does. But the situation is obviously very different now.

City might seek to sign another forward – and Evan Ferguson is seemingly now available.

It’s been reported by the Telegraph that Brighton are now ready to loan out striker Evan Ferguson.

The Republic of Ireland international has fallen down the pecking order at the Amex Stadium in recent times, and has made just nine mainly substitute appearances so far this term. He has played just 258 minutes, scoring one goal.

With Brighton having done so well this season, there have been very few opportunities for Ferguson, and it now looks like he’ll be allowed to leave. Brighton are said to be reluctant to avoid selling their £60 million-rated star.

This is interesting from a City perspective because the club have been linked with him previously.

City were said to be ready to bid for Ferguson in the summer, but nothing ended up materialising.

City were also linked with Ferguson in May 2023, with a report stating the club saw him as a future replacement for Haaland.

Why Man City should consider Evan Ferguson loan move

Brighton may not wish to send Ferguson on loan to City given the presence of Haaland. The Seagulls would probably prefer their man to join a club where he’s going to start every single game.

But this is something City should at least look into because at the moment there is too much of a reliance on Haaland. Guardiola asked yesterday what team wouldn’t be dependent on Haaland, but certainly, his life could be made much easier.

There needs to be another source of goals and Ferguson might just be someone who could come in and ease the burden.

Evan Ferguson for Brighton
Appearances – 74
Goals – 17
Assists – 5

He’s scored 17 in 74 for Brighton which isn’t mindblowing, but he is still only 20 years old and at least he has experience of the league.

It’s always difficult for clubs to sign players in January, but the fact Ferguson is actually available on loan could help City in the short-term.

He may have dropped off a bit in recent times, but Alan Shearer did once hail Ferguson’s confidence and desire to score goals. City need someone like that right now aside from Haaland and surely must be considered.
