Juanma Lillo says ‘exceptional’ Man City player will play this weekend vs Sheffield United

Bernardo Silva could return to action against Sheffield United after missing Manchester City’s last two games.

The Portuguese midfielder played the full 90 minutes of City’s Premier League opening day victory against Burnley two weeks ago but has not featured since due to illness.

The 29-year-old missed City’s UEFA Super Cup final victory against Sevilla and the 1-0 win against Newcastle in the Premier League three days later.

Bernardo is good to go

Pep Guardiola will be absent from the dugout at Bramall Lane on Sunday when City take on Sheffield United.

The City boss underwent back surgery this week and will not return until after the September international break.

Assistant coach Juanma Lillo will take his place. Speaking to the media on Friday, Lillo confirmed that Bernardo has recovered and is available for selection.

“Perhaps it’s a question for the doctor, but he’s trained fully normally,” the Spanish coach said.

“I don’t think he’s ill and he’s good to go.”

Bernardo’s return from illness is the second piece of good news relating to the midfielder this week.

The Portugal international’s future at City has looked uncertain this summer, with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Al-Hilal all interested in signing him.

Bernardo rejected a highly lucrative contract offer from Al-Hilal and this week signed a one-year contract extension with the club to extend his current deal until 2026.

However, there have been reports that the new deal includes a release clause that could be activated next summer, should the ‘exceptional‘ attacker wish to leave.

Bernard has wanted to play in a warmer climate since 2020, although he has never tried to force his way out of the club.
